af1-comfort.COLOEEB SCHOOL.; -Tills school, the only one of its kind in the State, Is located at Bridgewater, Bucks county, near Bristol. It was founded in 1808, by a committee of ladies and gentlemen to whom too much praise cannot be h warded for their self-denying labor, In collecting the orphans of our fol-lea colored soldiers firoui all. parts, of the State, and placing them at One locality, under its fostering care, .^ithin about fourteen mouths, I have visited and thoroughly inspected the Bridgewater school eight times. /My reason for visiting the school/of. the colored children so much ottener than others, was not that I do not'cherish for them ail an equal interest, but because, In my Judgment, its necessities demanded unusual attention. I dwell with satisfaction and'delight on their greatly improved condition, as it Is now ex hiblted. Then “filthiness, and a su. perflulty of naughtiness1’ pained the eye and shocked the ear. To these things, habitual cleanliness and order liaye succeeded. Then the mass of the children were uncivil, riotous, in-subordinate—since then, they have learned to be clvllj obedient, respect-fu,# ‘Then they had to be Instructed in the flret rudiments of knowledge, many of them not knowing the alphabet or multiplication table. Now they spell, read. Write and cypher with facility and accuracy, and the more advanced are being .instructed In geography, mental arithmetic, grammar and vocal music. Then they knew tittle or nothing of religious truth, and of their obligations to serve God, and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Now they are diligent pupils in the {Sunday school, held each Lord’s day afternoon, and attentive, to a marked degree, to the tefcons taught them by their teachers. Taking into account the many hindrances from within and without, against which our colored soldiers’ orphans school has had to struggle, the marked progress made by these children, alike os it respects their moral, social and Intellectual status, Is calculated to excites both our admiration and wonder, and successfully refutes the theory that the colored race is, by nature, incapable of moral and intellectual elevation, “The tree it known by Us fruits,”*IlOUAN PATITOT.rc f’llK.nuvw
