There'll be German, Italian and Mexican, food maybe some Arabic and Swedish dishes like last year — and Paula Sturgeon is going to bake cornbread to take. She and the 60-some other youth, members of the Inter-High School Brotherhood Council of the Arizona Region of the National Council of Christians and Jews, will be gathering Thursday night for the second International Food Party at Brophy High School, Phoenix. “Each participant will be sharing some dish of food from his or her own cultural background,” explained the Rev. Don Eagle, director of Scottsdale Daily Progress 9 Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1973 That's why Miss Sturgeon chose cornbread: “My father is from the deep South,” she said. She is one of five Scottsdale residents on the planning committee for the event. The Council was organized in 1960 as a follow-up to the first “Anytown, Arizona” session held in 1957. The week-long summer camp is for selected delegates of varying backgrounds. It has continued annually, giving Arizona youth a chance to learn about the field of human relations and enjoy the fellowship of those from, differing backgrounds, Mr. Eagle explained. “The ‘first delegates wanted the ex periences to continue, so they ‘organized the Council and it has expanded now to include anyone interested in its aims,” he added. Miss Sturgeon, a Scottsdale High School senior, joined recently, as did a classmate, Doug Rosoff, following their ‘Anytown session last summer. Susan Manker, an Arcadia High School junior said ‘‘I like what the Council is trying to do.” Miss Sturgeon describes ‘Anytown’ as “one of the greatest things on earth and this keeps the spirit of it going.” Lucinda Mar shall, an Arcadia student, believes :‘It makes people more aware of each other and we meet people from other schools.” Karen Churchill of Arcadia also is a member. All five are on the Council’s steering committee. Mr. Eagle expanded on their thoughts: ‘We hope the Council enables these young people to cross beyond their own small areas of friendship, mixing different social, economic and ethnic backgrounds. It’s a learning and broadening experience. For some it is helpful in determining their ultimate careers.” He said he knows of several now in college, who decided to enter vocations which have impact on social change. One in particular plans a career with the sponsoring Con farannon ha ooid APLUNULG, UU oain. The Council meets once a month for various activities — one of the favorites is the evening when each brings inspirational material to read or sing with guitar strumming by can dlelight. The readings deal with human un derstanding or brotherhood.
