TEACHERS’ LOCAL INSTITUTE. An Interesting Session of the Teachers of the Roaring Creek Valley. The annual local institute of the pub Valley was held in the Centre M. E. church at Roaringcreek on Saturday last. Three sessions were held—morn ing, afternoon and evening. A. Kiracofe The “Pentecostal Hymns” were used. Mr. Miller brought the institute to a general conference in school work, also told the importance of teachers’ term report. Small’s Hand-Book was intro duced, which gives information of State Officers, and is to be used with teaching civil government. The point emphasized was “‘teaching children how to use books and find out what they wish to know.” An important question was brought before the institute by the chairman, W. G. Beaver; it was the question of “Civil Government.” Civil government and algebra will undoubtedly be taught next year in our public schools, and teachers are to take an examination up on those subjects. Algebra will princi pally dwell upon “factoring.” The question was satisfactorily answered by Supt. J. K. Miller. A question of State appropriation was brought up by Rev. E. E. Melvy in re gard to township high schools. It was clearly shown how we may have town ship high schools with very little, more cost to the tax payers than the present expense. The State law provides $5,500, 000.00 each year for the public schools of Pennsylvania. Township high schools have an appropriation of $25,000.00 yearly.
