Father Shields ' Will Address , Lecture Club*“Roman' Daily Lift” Chosen By Spring ' Hill ProfessorThe Spring Hill Lecture club will have for itI next lecutrer the Reverend Thomas Shields, S. J., pro-lessor of Latin in Spring Hill col- w lege, who has announced as the subject of his lecture, “Roman Daily Life.** The lecture will be given In the Mobile Public library on Thursday evening, January 36, * at 8:16 o’clock.During the course of his classical studies Father Shields has made a kind of hobby of investigations into the ordinary home and civil life of the old Romans.He has amassed a large amount of data on the subject gathered from the literature and the archealogi-cal finds of recent years. Some yeans ago he gave a course to the summer school of Loyola University, New Orleans, on the subject and found that great Interest was aroused by it. Since then he has gathered a great many more facte which he will present to his com- * ing lecture. •He will speak of the make-up of the Roman family, marriage ceremonies, the position of woman in the Roman household, the education of children, and the treatment of guests, clients and slaves. * The Roman house and its furnishings will be described. Roman food, its preparation and consumption will be discussed. Roman’s amusements, games, work, etc., will 'be compared wtih ours. *The lecture will be a good, supplement to rputine class work In Latin literature but will prove interesting to all, revealing' as It will, a civilization which though different to some respects from ours,, nevertheless is the basis of our own culture.The Spring Hill College Ole# 1 club, under the direction of Mr. Peter J. Colvin, will render several musical numbers before tht opening of the lecture.MRS. G. BAKER HOSTESS—Mrs. Grover Baker complimented Mrs. Fred Rossen and Mrs. Kennedy with a shower Tuesday, January 17. Little Betty Jane Weaver carried the basket containing the presents. The hanorees received many beautiful presents.Mrs. O. Simms was presented a warming pad by the members of the Fulton club.
