With one other family they left their old Kentucky home and with three children started for Vigo County, Indiana, where a large number of their former freinds and neighbors had settled. They went all the way in a two-horse wagon, making the trip in one week. Their account of the journey was a most interesting one.Their new home was on a farm in Piferson township. After much ha*d work it was made to yield good returns. Here Mrs. Hargis lived for 55 years. Mr. Hargis died in 1894. Like all other settlers, their life consisted of many hard tasks. They produced with their own hands most of their food and clothing. In spite of long days of hard labor Mrs. Hargis found time to read her Bible and keep a ^mall library of the choicest books. Her knowledge of history and literature was surprising. It was during her busy life that she learned to read* and write.In that early day, ^hen doctors were few, she went many times ih day or night to the bedside of someone who was suffering. When duty called Mrs. Hargis was there, j At home and with friends during her long life she has often had to look upon sorrow and death. All this she bore with courage and fortitude. She was strong in the hour of affliction.
