There arrived in the city a gray- haired, pink-faced fellow, weighin’ about 285 pounds, who registered at a Chicago street hostelry as “John L. Sullivan, Boston.” ‘It was the ex champion coming again to the city for the first time since he appeared here years ago. Then, as it is to be now, he was Introduced to the public here from the stage of a local theater—but then it cost several dollars to catch a glimpse of the gladiator, now one can see him for one-tenth of a dollar—such is fame. In conversation relative to the box ing game as it is today and as it was ,a dozen years ago, Sullivan delivered the ‘following: “Boxing has not improved as an art lim years, though there were not as many boxers 15 years ago as now. It is an evident fact that when I took up boxing and put it in shape so that they could make some money out of it, both the managers and the fighters. Boxing has gone ahead in this coun try and deteriorated in England. They have not had a champion in England for a long time, neither heavy nor light weight. Mitchell was the last cham pion they had in England. John one like myself, was champion both in this country and England in his day. He is still alive. This goes to show that ‘boxers, or fighters if you prefer that term, have,as such men, lived to good old age. Mace is 74 years of age anl well and hearty today.” ‘John L. Sullivan will be at the Grand Theater all this week. Matinee every day.
