This Seattle-based trio was around long before it was trendy to be from that region. Kurt Cobain was once a roadie for them, and later a producer.However, on Stoner Witch the Melvins blow hot and cold. They are interesting when playing a dynamic hybrid of punk, melodic rock and heavy sounds, which they do with elan on such songs as Queen, Sweet Willy Rollbar and Revolve.However, they all too often mire themselves in pointless, ploddingrepetition. Magic Pig Detective includes a 3-1/2 minute intro that isnothing more than a failed sonic experiment often akin to a broken transmission. ★★ 1/2John Lyons
