Lydon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the United States yesterday renewed the oath he took on a fateful day just short of fourteen months ago. With his left hand resting on his mother’s well-worn Bible and his right hand raised he solemnly repeated: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully exe cute the office of President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United Sates, so help me God.” The administering of the oath by white hair ed, Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the United States, marked the beginning of Johnson’s first elective term to president in the kite. iuiuse. House Speaker John W. Mc Cormack had administered the Vice Presidential oath only a short time before to Minne sota’s Hubert H. Humphrey. Clergymen participating in fe ceremony were: the most Reverend Robert E. Lucy, Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Antonio, Texas; Rev. George Davis, of National City Christian Church, the denomi nation to which Johnson be longs; Rabbi Hyman Judah Schacteh, of Beth Israel Con gregation, Houston; and Greek Orthodox Archbishop Iskoros. Three major events were part of the 45th presidential inaugu ration beginning with the ac tual swearing in ritual. The second was the grand parade on Washington’s thoroughfare of Presidents, Pennsylvania Avenue. The parade was unique in the absence of the usual dis play of military might. The theme of the inaugural events were pointed to stress the na tion’s peaceful accomplishments pool, present and hope for in the future. Finally, the gigantic 2ail which was spread over a large armoury and four of the city’s largest hotel ballrooms. The Johnson’s and Humph rey’s took a look-see at all five balls where it is estimated some 25,000 persons were in atten dance. The day was marked by the most vigilant and tightest secu rity measures ever. Riflemen swarmed on the rooftops and balconies of buildings every where the president and his party were to go. The 1200 man honor guard carried no rifles so that no one could masquerade as a soldier and get in position to harm the new President. Inch-and-a-half thick glass was in place at the capitol for the inaugural and at the White House parade re viewing stand. Despite reluc tance on the president's part the new bubble-top was on the presidential limousine for the parade. In his address Johnson re affirmed to the world that “we aspire to nothing that belongs to others. We seek no dominion over our fellowman, but man’s dominion over tyranny and misery.” To this nation he promised, “I will lead and I will do the best I can. But you must ®ink within your own hearts—to the old promises and the old dreams.
