Newly Elected to Vermont Supreme Bench Has Served in Both Branches of State Legislature Special Dispatch to the Globe BARTON. VI. Jan 20—Judge Willard W. Miles of the Superior Court, who was elected to the Supreme Court bench on Thursday, is a son of Orin Miles and Hunice (Clark) Miles. He comes from old New England stock, his ancestors settling in this country about 1690. The great-grandfathers of Justice Miles were both Revolutionary soldiers. One, William Miles, is buried at Lyndon Center and is named in the Hst upon the soldiers’ monument. The other, Samuel Clark, is buried at St Johns bury. Justice Miles was born in Albany, VI, on ied 6, 1815. He received a common school education in that town and fitted for college in the academy at Hatley, PQ. After that, he took private instruction in Greek and Latin with Rev. K. B. Perkins, then at Glover, VI. He studied law in the office of the fion W. W. Grout and later became his partner, and for about eight year that firm carried on a very large practice. When Mr Grout was elected to Con gress Mr Miles continued the office until he became judge of the Supreme Court of Vermont in it). He continued a mem ber of that court until the Fall of 1906, When the Legislature created the dual court. At that time he, with Justices Haselton and Powers, present members of the Supreme Court were elected Su perior Judges. As vacancies occurred it the Supreme Court, Hagerton and Powers were elected to that court and now Judge Miles has been elected to that court to fill the vacancy occasioned to the retirement of Chief Justice Mun son. _Judge Miles has been Chief Superior judge since 1907. While a resident of Albany, he was superintendent of schools, and in 1872 was a Representative. He was admitted to the bar in that year. He was prin cipal of Craftsbury ‘Academy in ‘1874, and in 1875 was elected towic clerk of that town, Wwinch office he held until 18s1, when he came to Barton. ‘Atar he came here he was State's at torney for four years, as Senator in Nv 5 and represented Barton in 1904, Tie is a member of the Congregational Church and a Mason. In September, 1872, Mr Niles married Huen M. Dow of Albany. Three chil dren were born to them, Ida M., now Mrs H. m. Cutler; Mabel A., now Mrs BD. Phompaon, on Orin L., who died. JUDGE WILLARD Wy.
