Pocahontas county has settled the damage suit started by G. A. Aden, by paying him $500. He asked for $20,000. On account of a case of diphther ia in town, the Terrill school has been closed to prevent, if possible, a spread of the disease. S.At a meeting of the stockholders ' of the Pomeroy-Palmer Mutical Tele phone Co, the bid offers were re elected, with one exception, Peter Long being the newly elected treasurer. The Palmer meat market has again changed hands, Jahon Cornwall having purchased the business as well as the building. He has secured Ben Freeman to manage the business for him. Paul Peterson, of Pine Bluffs, Wys., was there on business and call ing on old friends the past week. Paul has been doing lots of business, too. He has traded his stock of goods at Pine Bluffs for a half-section farm in eastern Nebraska. He then pro ceeded to unload his Pocahontas county property. The meat market building in Palmer he sold to John Cornwall and his 80-acre farm one- half mile north of town was sold to George Siebels, the consideration be ing $190 per acre. This land has no buildings or improvements. Manson Democrat Sheriff Wheeler arrived in this city last night and started to work on the case of J. R. Emerson, the piano salesman who has been in Manson up to about a week ago, since which time he had disappeared and taken with him over $600 of the money of the people he was Working for, Emerson's scheme was to talk Aman into buy ing a piano and give him an enticing discount for cash; then he would forge the man’s name on a note and burn it over to his employers. He forged the name of E. F. Bodenstein of Pomeroy, and W. M. Vetter of Manson, and did it so clevely that it was only after he jumped the town that the holders of the notes got sus picious. Emerson was a ‘‘chaser’’ after women and fetters found in his room indicate that he had sev eral damsels of tarnished fame on his list. He was an impudent, mean looking fellow, but a good talker and a good salesman. His first work in the town savored of crooked ness, but he was never caught with the goods on him. It is quite likely that he is a long distance and it will probably be some time before he is captured. Mrs. JL. Elbert, a young lady of Havelock, is dead.
