He afterward fought the institution of slavery and helped the negroes to escape, and in one of these acts he violated one of the laws of Virginia. At some time during the week previous to the issue the marshal arrested William Franklin 011 a charge of theillegalsale ofliquor, aiijil we thinking that it had been served on the proprietor of the place reported it as E. S. Franklin, whose name the place is run under. According to the statutes the proprietor of a place which sells liquor is responsible for the actions of the house, hence our mistake. Accidents of this kind, while not frequent, are liable to happen under such confusing circumstances.History of Adams Township.gradeBelow we print an essay written by Russel Bennet, an eighth scholar, which is one of the few which will be sent to the World’s Fair this year:When the first settlers first came to this country it was densely for-rested, with no open tracts of land or fertile plains like are everywhere now. This land was inhabited by the birds and beasts of the forest or perchance aBlanche, J. Accord and James Le-Masters made a settlement a little west of where Boxleytown now is in the year 1829. This part of the country was called Boxley’s swamp. A settlement was made near the present site of Baker’s Corner between the yearn 1831 and 1837 by N. Pearson, Daniel bee, Wm, Davis, Geo. Rusliton and others.I11 the year i860 Egbert Higbee laid out a town 011 the south side of the pike running east and west and named it Millwood. When he applied for a post office several years later it was found that there was another town in Indiana by thesame name so it was changed to .*!• -Sheridan. Caswell Boxley laid out an addition to the town 011 the north side of the pike. In i860 P. G. Pearson * opened a harness shop which was the first place of business in Sheridan. Dr. Moore was the first man to open a store in town.I11 the early days, the farmers had to build their own roads. They labored continually cutting down forests and clearing away underbrush, enduring all hardship without complaint. They had to strive continually against nature to maintain annow. The LaFayette and Straw-town road was built -about the year 1830. It was one of the leading roads of the time. It runs east and west. Not long afterward a road was builr. from LaFayette to No-blesville. He taught his own children and his neighbors children in a little log cabin on his own farm.
