A LIFE SAVED AND A LIFE DOST.Mr. Carttar has held an inquest at Plumstead on Frederick Alfred Craft, aged 31, formerly a railway guard, and recently night inspector at the Woolwich Arsenal Station on the North Kent Line, who was killed by being ran over by a train while saving the life of an insane woman who had thrown herself in front of the engine.—Mr. Bartholomew, station master, and other witnesses described the accident.-—Mr. Moore, relieving officer, said the woman was Eliza Newman, a widpw, aged 45, who had been found wandering at Woolwich* She was well known in the neighbourhood, but had recently been living at Worthing. She was taken down to the infirmary at Plum stead, where she remained until Friday afternoon, a$d, a certificate having been signed by two medical men, she was taken before a magistrate and an order made for her removal to the county asylum. She was regarded a* a perfectly harmless lunatic, but Miss Wilkinson the infirmary matron, for whom she conceived a partiality, consented to accompany her. _ At the moment when she jumped from the platform, Miss Wilkinson had bold of her jacket, but the^ fabric gave way- and left a piece in her hand.—A verdict was retnrned of killed in attempting to save the life of a lunatic.—The P.ev. G. Webb, foreman of the jury, expressed a. hope that the public would recognise the gallantry of the deceased by providing for his children, and a subscription was made on behalf of a fund which the station master is raising.
