By OMAR GREENE I Of The News-Sun Starf The timekeeper will ring the gong for the first bout in the two-night Hobbs Invitational Boxing Tournament at 8 p.m. on Friday, and the first of the night's 15 to 20 boxing matches will be presented at Auction City, 5000 Knowles Road. A similar number of fights will be on the for the second night’s events, beginning at 6 p.m. ‘The tournament is sponsored by the Hobbs Boacing Club and will feature Flory Velazquez, a focal featherweight (128 pounds) who in his first year as a fighter has won seven bouts and let one match “by a slim decision,” according to Hobbs Beang Club Coach Luis Mora. Besides boes from the Hobbs’ Club, entries will include boxers from Carlsbad, Loving, Portales and Roswell boxing ban Mora aan : weight classes will range from the #-pound “pee wees” to light-heavyweights (178 pounds), Mora said. We also expect some open division fighters to come in here.”” _ Novice division fighters of all weight classes ight two minute rounds and are matched with opponents with a similar amount of ring experience, Mora explained. Those in the open division battle through three-minute rounds and may save opponents with 100 or more fights under their belt. Although Hobbs’ Velazquez is fighting as a novice, he is being billed as the tournament’s feature fighter because of the quickness, hard punching and dukaround ring talent he has shown this year, Mora said. _ Besides Velazquez, other local boxers entered will include Mike Padilla, Sonny Rodriguez,Raymond Rubio, Kenneth Flood, Sammy Gonzales, Hector Loves, Orlando Clivas, Simon Mora, Darrell Savage, Andrew Botello, Isidro Castillo, Steve Martinez, Martin Pena, Johnny Briseno and Eddy Tello. Use of the recently completed Auction City building was donated by Jack Peacock, who said, We are helping with the (Hobbs Boxing Club) program because we are interested In our city’s youth. Mora said several businesses here also have made con tributions to help furnish equipment for the team. They include Cathey Air Conditioning Co., Luna’s Drive In, Family Cafe, Moronco, Haynes Engine Service, Pemio of New Mexico and Pak-A-Sak. “These donations are appreciated by both the kids and the coaches, Mora said. “I also want to mention our trainer, Sabino Rodriguez. He's taking the time to do a good job of working with these young men.”
