Troopers Capture Alleged Murderer After Gun BattlerStClletcclWaycroBS, Ga., Straight shooting State Troopers capture'll an alleged negro murderer deep in a swamp between llomervllle and Valdosta after a gun battle in which Corporal J. E. Davis of this district headquarters disarmed the negro with a w'^ll placed shot that shattered his ann. Davis shoulder was grazed by a bullet from the negro’s gun.The negro, Isaac McBride, alleged to have killed Deputy Sheriff Carey Thomas of Clinch county last Friday night, had been the object of a widespread man hunt for nearley 24 hours Corporal Davis and Trooper J. R. Cook, accompanied by J. M. Ray, J.G. Newton and J. R. Harris, private citizens of the county, entered the swamp 5 miles below Cogdill on the a Homerville-Valdosta highway about n 5:30 Saturday afternoon.McBride opened fire on the Troopers from a hiding place in the swamp but Corporal lavis whirled and put a bullet through his arm before any of his -shots could find a mark. Davis suffered a slight /wound in his shoulder as one bullet from McBride’s gun grazed under the skin. He received treatment at a Homerville hospital and returned to duty.Troopers took the negro to an unannounced jail where he was placed in the custody of sheriff to await trial for the murder of Deputy Thomas.This was the first gun battle in which Troopers have engaged al though while persuing the “baby bandits” from Tennessee some Troopers were fired upon in the Carters-ville district. The bandits had high powered rifles and Troopers could not get close enough to use tli^ir service revolvers.Since that incident all headquarters have been equipped with rifles, and shot guns for use in an emergency.All Troopers have a rating at least as high as “marksman”, according to Army standards. Thirty of the S men now on duty are “experts shots” with 20 r.'^ted “sharp-shooters”. No Trooper is accepted who can not shoot at least “marksman rating on the range.
