Capture of an Illicit St;ll.On Thursday of lAst week Win. Callsg-han. who was arrested on Wednesday by Constable Short on the charge of illicit distilling, came before County .UagMnue Deacon, and being convicted was sentenced to pay a tine cf §1lt;W and serve one-month in the county g;ol at hard la1-or. Inspector IS. Flood? o’f the inland revenue* department at Ottawa was the officer who investigated the matter, and succeeded in securing the illicit stilf. which had con. stantly been operated by Callaghan on his farm, south half lot 6, con. 13, Kraily township, for some fc-ine past. The illicit distiller will get his liberty in time to start at spring work on the farm Callaghan is suspected of being an old offender against the inland revenue laws. On one occasion, a few years ago, a county constable undertook to corral Callaghan, but did not calculate correctly on hi» man. The officer was compelled much against his will to go in an opposite direction to the wav he wanted, and was glad to get away from t tie wily manufacturer of pure but untaxed whiskey.
