Police Attacker Dies of Wounds After ShootoutBY MARGARET KESTERAn undercover narcotics agent fatally wounded a suspect in a Santa Fe gun battle about 1:20 p.m. yesterday, behind the 800 block of East Palace Avenue.State Policeman Mike Salazar, planning to purchase cocaine and “bust” a drug pusher, faced instead an armed robber who “ripped him off” according to city policeman, Sgt. Reyes Montoya.Sgt. Montoya, first on the scene, said the suspect tentatively identified as Andrew Joseph Hobbs, grabbed $1,100 from Agent Salazar, fired a shot at him and fled. Salazar, superficially wounded in the hand, returned the fire and alarmed residents notified city police who rushed to the scene.The injured men were rushed to nearby St. Vincent’sHospital, where Salazar was treated and released. Due to the nature of the his assignment, Salazar was unavailable for comment or pictures.Lab technicians quicky typed the suspect’s blood and state policemen rushed blood in from Albuquerque for him. A priest was sent for and attended the victim while he was in the emergency room. Hobbs died in surgery at 4 p.m., St. Vincent’s spokesman, Vina Windes, reported.Sgt. Montoya said the suspect gave his first name as Andrew and had in his possession a birth certificate bearing the name Jackie Gomez, a Selective Service card for Philip Cummings, and five lids of marijuana. Hobbs also admitted to taking part in an armed robbery two weeks ago, Sgt. Montoya said.
