Statistics compiled by Tuske gee Institute in the department of records and research, show that only 16 persons were lynch ed during the year 1927, a de crease of 14 from the number of 30 in 1926. The report shows that the number of lynchings were one less than the 17 for 1925, the same number of 15 for 1924, and 17 less than the num ber 33 for 1923. Twelve of the persons lynched were taken from the hands of the law, six from jails and six from offices of the law oustide of jails. Four of the number were burned to death, which the officers prevent the bodies then burnd. There were 42 instances in whichfficers of the law prevent ed lynchings. Eight of these were in northern states and 34 in the southern states. In 24 of the cases the prisoners were remov ed or the guards augmented or other precautions taken.
