Offences.—Saturday Caroline Lavender underwent her final examination before the Lord Mayor, at the, Manfion-hoofe, charged with privately Sealing from the houfe of Mr. Webfter, watchmaker, *Change-alley, Cornhill. From the evidence of Mr. Webfter it appeared, the prifonejr. was a fervant in the houfe, by which means ihe found an opportunity to-commit this robbery. He faid he had promifed her pardon, if fiie would tell him .where he might have his watches again; but that (he did not tell him the truth, nor where ail the watches could be found ; that finee her laft examination, he had found a watch, which (he faid (he had loft, but bad thrown it down the privy : two more were produced by two pawnbrokers, who gave in evidence that they were pledged by the. prifoner, one in the name of Nightingale, and the other in the name t)! Johnfton. Mr. Charles Aldridge repeated his evidence of the prifoner coming to nis Stop and purchafing a watch key, and a(ked if he dealt in watches, teiiing him (he. had two to. dlfpofe of, as (he was in want of money, being obliged to go to Brighton with a child, which had been bit by a mad dog ; that (he lived with her mother, in Moorfieids j that he defired her to leave the watches till next day, which the did ; but when Ihe called again, (he faid ihe lived withher mother, In Shoe-lane; and-ft«p fitverjl I other contradictions, he thought it hh duty to. de* tain her, and produced the two watches.
