Plans for the opening of a new Spurgeon’s full service depart ment store in Fairfield were announced today by P. W. Hayes, president of the firm. The greatly enlarged store will be located in the building presently occupied by the Brad shaw Furniture Co. Spurgeon'’s will take posses sion of the building on April 1. A Grand Opening is tentative ly scheduled for late summer. The company also announced the appointment of William Coultas as manager of the new Spurgeon store. Coultas is pres ent manager of the Spurgeon store in Ottumwa. He began his duties in Fairfield today, succeeding William Gunderson. Gunderson recently resigned to accept a new position with the United Benefit Society, Inc., in Maine, Iowa. Spurgeon officials said the latest designs in new fixtures and interior decor will be in stalled in the new Fairfield store, making it the most mod ern shopping center in south east Iowa. The store will operate on three levels: the mezzanine, first floor and basement. Many new departments will be added, including a beauty salon, men’swear department, full service shoe department, juvenile furniture department, full bedding department and a full service floor covering and custom drapery department with in-the-home selling by qual ified personnel. Spurgeon’s has been a mem ber of the Fairfield business community for 58 years, opening its first store here on March 22, 1913. The Fairfield store was the eighth opened by pioneer mer chant H. F. Spurgeon in a chain that now numbers 62 centers in four midwestern states. Spurgeon started business in the town of Afton, near Creston, with a small general merchan dise store complete with cracker barrel and buggy whips. His policy of “the best possible qual ity merchandise at the lowest prices” resulted in steady growth and satisfied customers over the years. “We are pleased to bring one of our largest, most modern stores to serve the people of Fairfield and surrounding area,”’ President Hayes said. “With all of the new depart ments added, we will offer a much more complete shopping service and we feel that our new store will make Fairfield a still better town in which to shop. The loyal patronage of our many customers and friends in this area make our continued growth in Fairfield possible,”
