When the national monument)was established the government jclaimed ownership of this land. The |title was disputed, however, and the j Supreme Court of the United States j sustained the adverse claim in 1914, The mission remained in privateIIownership until a few months ago,I jwhen the owners of the tract donatedto the government the 10 acres on which the mission stands. The public spirited action of the former owners in transferring this ancient ruin to the government deserves the appreciation of the Service and of the country at large, as the opportunity is thus given to preserve one of the most interesting relics of theearly Spanish exploration arid settlement“The donors of this property are James E. Bouldin, Jennie N. Bould-in, Helen Lee Bouldin and WeldonM. Bailey. The preliminary work ofpreservation will begin as soon aspracticable under the direction of Mr. Frank Pinckley, custodian of the j Casa Grande National Monument.”It will be recalled that Mr. Pink-ley made a visit to the Tumacacori I ruin a couple of weeks ago, and atthat time he arranged with Mr. A,S. Noon to undertake soi^e of thepreliminary work of restoration. I
