Mr Steinberg Satinned W ith the Krmilt. ______ tThe sewer tax of $S.52 due the city f from the Jewish synagogue, was paid today. When Mr. Steinberg asked the council last Monday evening to relieve ‘ the synagogue from the payment of the ( tax on the grounds that he would have j to pay the tax out of his own pocket, other members of the synagogue claim he spoke without authority from them. ' “We expect and v/ant to pay our debts to the city or anyone else,” said a prominent member of the congregation this 1 morning, “and Mr. Steinberg’s plea to J * the council was without the cougre- , ^ gation’s sanction. The following members of the con- ! * gregation subscribed for the amounts jv opposite their names and the obliga- j{ tion was wiped out: P. L Lazarus. 50 cents.! jMr. Steinberg, on being interviewed as to the above, expressed himself as highly pleased, the result being much j better than he hacl any reason to ex- j pect, inasmuch as this is the first step , taken by any one outside himself or I Mrs. Steinberg tc relieve the obliga- i tions of the synagogue or matters associated with it; such as improvements, . repairs to the synagogue and to the grounds, etc., of the Hebrew cemetery. ;,“In regard to these others wishing I j to pay all just claims,” said Mr. Stein- ! berg, “ I may say the assessment for j. sewer on Washington street, about ' ( 250 feet away from the Hebrew con ( gregation and which for that reason j will never be of benefit to our church, is not a just claim. I stand ready, as ; I always have in the past, to see that . all just claims against the Hebrew con- } gregation are justly paid.”A S. Fryman said this afternoon: . “We don’t want people to think we , are in a quarrel in the church. There is no such thing. All we want is that 1 j th* people shoulu know that the syna- , gegue is not deserted, that we have a j rabbi here and that tne congregation , has in no way dwindled and that we as a congregation pay our obligations.”
