When Mr. Steinberg asked the council last Monday evening to relieve ‘ the synagogue from the payment of the ( tax on the grounds that he would have j to pay the tax out of his own pocket, other members of the synagogue claim he spoke without authority from them. ' “We expect and v/ant to pay our debts to the city or anyone else,” said a prominent member of the congregation this 1 morning, “and Mr. Steinberg’s plea to J * the council was without the cougre- , ^ gation’s sanction. The following members of the con- ! * gregation subscribed for the amounts jv opposite their names and the obliga- j{ tion was wiped out: P. I stand ready, as ; I always have in the past, to see that . all just claims against the Hebrew con- } gregation are justly paid.”A S. Fryman said this afternoon: . “We don’t want people to think we , are in a quarrel in the church. There is no such thing. All we want is that 1 j th* people shoulu know that the syna- , gegue is not deserted, that we have a j rabbi here and that tne congregation , has in no way dwindled and that we as a congregation pay our obligations.”
