A GOOD TOWN. Up in Northern Ohio--What People Have Been Doing.--Defiance and What it is. The eyes of the United States are upon this particular northwestern part, of the real commonwealth of Ohio The won derful gas and oil territory that has been developed, has brought hundreds of people to this section for the purpose of locating in business. The once all wonderful oil fields of Pennsylvania, and later southern New York, has sent her thousands to en gage in the various pursuits peculiar only to an oil and gas region. Findlay, Fostoria and Bowling Green, are towns that went u P with an immense boom, but have not, wit perhaps the exception of Findlay, sustained themselves since. Defiance was then a slow — moving town of 5,000 people Since then it has increased in range until now we can muster close to 9. There has been no unnatural increase, no grutting, and no booming. Manufacturing companies have been given no big bonus to lest, and still almost as many men are employed in manufacturies, here as in the boom town of Findlay. THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY is one of the richest and most productive agricultural parts of Ohio, and in time will be the garden spot of the State. Defiance is the market place for all this producing country. Thousands of bushels of wheat are brought here each fall and Poe by railroad and canal to different cities, or manufactured into four by the mammoth ae of Arbuckle, Ryan Co., or A. Wilhelm Son. FOR WATER POWER Defiance is abundantly supplied. The Maumee and the Auglaize, meet here and mingle their waters At the confluence, on the point of land between them, stands what is left of Fort Defiance, erected in the days when Mad Anthony Wayne, was raising particular thunder among the In dians, round about Hundreds of thousands feet of logs are rafted down these streams to the mills each year. The canal is also used for this purpose and the ease with which mills can get timber is no doubt the reason why so many have located here THE PRINCIPAL MANUFACTURING establishments are the Turnbull Wagon Works, Defiance Machine Works, Burgland Shead, bucket factory; Karst Tenzer, lumber and planing mill; Oconto stave works; P. Kuhn, tobacco boxes; Marshall Greenier, staves and heading; C. Geiger Son, furniture; D. F. Holston Son, hoops; Crowe Hooker, staves and heading; Trowbridge Eddy, staves; Defiance Paper Mills; Arbuckles, Ryan Co., Erie Mills; A. Wilhelm Son,City Mill; I. Schlosser Son, carriages and wagons; H. Bokop Co. carriages and wagons; Corwin Kiser, carriages and wagons; Fat Jarvis, woolens and woolen yarns; C Diehl, brewery; D. Widmer Son, bottling works; A. Benz, wine press, and many others. These firms supply with work over 1,250 MEN the year around and in the winter many more. There are four cigar factories, the largest being Chas E. Bronson’s Defiance Ciger Works, employing 25 men and several girls. The two flouring mills manufacture 400,000 barrels of four a year, most of it being shipped to Portland, Mo. The Defi ance Machine Works manufacture wood working machinery, plows, castings, en gines, and etc. It is owned by a stock company, of which Peter Kettenring is resident and principal stockholder. With the introduction of Natural Gas which will be piped in before spring if not found in the hole now being drilled on the South side, all manufacturing enterprises will boom. THE SHIPPING FACILITIES are excellent. Two trunk lines, the B. O. and the Wabash, cross here. Ten tiles west is the C. J. M. crossing the B. O. at Sherwood, with close connections for Cin cinnatii and Battle Creek, or any part in Mich. The Columbus, Lima, and North western will be built next year, the contract already having been let, which will give direct communication with Lima, Columbus, and Centre Ohio, THE COURT HOUSE county jail are located here. There is new city hall, a fire department, ed and efficient, Gas, and Elec excellent public schools.
