LAW INTELLIGENCE.Old Bailey-The Call Over.Yesterday the Sessions ended at this Hall, when Solomon Polock, for stealing in a dwelling house to the amount of 40s.—Sophia Pringle, for a forgery on the Bank—Frances Saunders, for returning from, transportation—Benjamin Nash,, for a highway-robbery—George Frank-lyn, Thomas Smith, Richard Allen, James Usher,-Richard Notely, Robert Richardson, Luke Hurst, for,.burglaries—James Marshall, John Ball, Thomas James, Joseph Crawley, for highway robberies—Mary Cummins, Mary Atkinson,for privately stealing, and John Frampton, for stealing in a dwelling house.—In all nineteen, re ceived Sentence of Death ; thirty-five'received sentence of transportation, five were ordered to imprisonment- and whipping, and Joseph Wiggings was ordered to Newgate for one week, and to be publicly whipped for 100 yards, from theend of Charles-street, Suffolk Mews j nine were Retained upon orders, and eleven were dis-charged-Parr, for the forgery on the Bank, and Moffat fbr forging a bill of exchange, were not brought up, as -their cases, are reserved, upon points of law, for the determination of the judges.The ne.n| Sessions will commence the 21 St dayof February next.Amongst the many extraordinaries that here occur, the following case stands as most remarkable. Samuel Burt, condemned to die for a forgery on Mr. Evans, Gold-beater in Long-Acre, to whom he was an apprentice, was yesterday, at the conclusion of the Sessions, brought up and informed by the Recorder, that his Majesty had remitted his sentence of death, on condition of transportation—which mercy, in a speech, of some length, he begged leave to decline.9 •The Recorder took every pains to convince him of the impropriety of his conduft.—But the prisoner, acknowledging his Majesty’s clen\ency, said, te The objeft for which he wished to live not being in his power to obtain, he declined all intercession in his favour, and must beg leave to have his sentence put into execution.”On which the Recorder informed him, that fee should wait till the first day of the next Sessions j.and if he then persisted in his resolution,he shouldsuffer.* mThe prisoner then retired from the bar, saying,, “ he should ever keep his intent, and only wished that the day was already come.”The cause of this resolution is said to be un-Bttained Love :—-Who then will deny the force of that passion ?At the close of the sessions yesterday, at the Old Bailey, Sophia Pringle exhibited the most melancholy picture of depression and misery that any. situation could possibly produce. Whilethe Recorder pronounced sentence she was unable to sustain herself, and was taken from thebar in fits pf the most agonizing distress. - Anexample such as this ought surely to be a warning in future, that no degree of necessity should; lead to so - dangerous an expedient for reliefas the commission of forgery.
