Last night's concert at Municipal Auditorium was full of high spats, and from the standpoint of musi cianship it tops anyiling the or chestra has offered «so far as for the size of the audience. It was probably the smallest to date, but they made up in appre ciation what they lacked in num ber. A warm welcome awaited Robert Rudie in his second performance with the orchestra. His sensitivity in the performance of the Wien iawski Concerto brought a storm of applause, and for his first encore he offered Gypsy Airs (Sarasale), but probably the audience favorite where Mr. Rudie was concerned was in his Ave Maria (Schubert). ‘The latter he played with only harp ac companiment, and it was most ef fective. The harp, by the way, was played by Anita Harvey, a new comer and certainly a pleasant ad dition to the orchestra. The Lost Forest, presented in its first public performance, was an other item of extreme interest. Using an essentially diaphonia tech nique, Mrs. Libbey managed to give the impression of great complexity. The work was well thought out, and well executed. It has an intellectual appeal as well as a sensuous one. Considering the fact that this is an early work, we can expect music of considerable substance from her in the future. As for the orchesta, they con tinued their pattern of improve ment. Warming up on Toccata and Fugue, they were in fine fet tle for the Franck symphony. This rather difficult number was beautifully done, particularly in the opening phrases of the second movement. In the third move ment the articulation was at time slightly indistinct, but it was a minor offense. Last night's programme eave on pop for some fine solo work, the English horn showed up to nie advantage in several instances it was pleasant to hear Mr. Rudie compliment the orchestra's work, since he had the opportunity of noting its progress over last year Following the final number, the Hungarian Rhapsody, the audience demanded an orchore, but the or chestra understandably declined, having had something of a work out in this auspicious program BET.
