IIIIIICOUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMENThe Council of Jewish Womenheld a membership tea, Jan. 16 atTemple Beth Israel. The guestspeaker was Mrs. Herman Lew-kowitz, speaking on “Phases ofCouncil Work.’* Included in the musical program were Mrs. Paul Burroway who gave an excerpt from a play; Miss Shirley Coblenz sang, accompanied on the pian by Mrs. Theo Pozil.Members who poured tea were: Mrs. H. Lesem, Mrs. F. Sitken,Mrs. C. Korrick, and Mrs. H. Lew-kowitz. At the December meeting Mrs. E. Andres spoke about the displaced persons of Europe and the national project of the Council in their behalf. Funds, by means of various affairs, are being raised by the Council to build homes for displaced Jewish women. At present there are two such homes in Greece and one in France. Another use ofthese same funds is for rehabilitation of displaced persons. Rehabilitation is carried out by bringing some of these people to United States on a scholarship basis, training them for particular trades and returning themto their home countries, wherethey may in turn train others.Another forthcoming money raising affair is a theatre partyto benefit the Crippled Children’shome.On Monday, Jan. 13th, the first of a number of refugees arrived in Phoenix. The Council of Jewish Women in conjunction with the Phoenix Jewish CommunityCouncil greeted 18 year old DavidGoldstein, who came from Belgium. His parents were killedin the War. He is a watch repairman and jewel polisher by trade and it is hoped that he canobtain employment in his'fieldhere.JUNIOR COUNCIL OFJEWISH WOMENThe annual Gala Bowery Costume night is to be staged on Feb. 9 at the Service Men’s Center. It will be open to the public and the proceeds will be used to assist the senior Council in its rehabilitation project and displaced persons projectCHI SIGMA DELTAFaye Stone, president, reports that their Infantile Paralysis fund-raising campaign will consist of the raffling of a General Electric pop-up automatic toaster, to be held on Feb. 1st at the home of vice-president Beverly Coleman, 2220 N. 9th Ave. Completing the organization of officers are Marcia Pearlstein, secretary; Elaine Bein, treasurer; and Edna Lipow, pledge mistress. Chi Sigma Delta is a cultural and social organization for young girls 15 to 20 years of age.
