The Dixon Sun. ;DIXON, ILLINOIS, JANUARY 17, 1883.or for volunteers to protect the invaded settlements, and was chosen captain of a volunteer company. After Stillman’s defeat the volunteers were disbanded, the time of their enlistment having expired. In re-forming, John Dement was elected commander of the batal-lion of spies and reported to General Taylor then stationed at Dixon. In Dixon at that time were assembled many young men who afterwards became prominent national characters. There were Major Win held Scott, afterwards general of the army, Jefferson Davis, then a young lieutenant in the regular army, and later president of the Southern Confederacy; Lieutenant Anderson, afterwards Major Anderson of Fort Sumpter fame and Abraham Lincoln, our martyred president, then a volunteer private. In 1836 Colonel Dement was elected representative and resigned his state treasurership to aceept that position. In 1837 he was appoint- , ed by president Jackson, receiver of the land office at Galena, which was removed to Dixon in 1840. He held this position until removed by presi- ( dent Harrison, was reinstated by pres- , ident Polk, was again removed by pres- ( idcnt Taylor, again reinstated by president Pierce, and continued in the position until the office was removed to Springfield by president Buchanan. In 1844 he was chosen presidential elector for James K. Polk. He was a ■ member of three state constitutional conventions, 1847-8, 1862, and 1870. j He was a member of all the conven- ( tions to revise the state constitution | since the state was first formed in 1818. , He served the city of Dixon as mayor for four consecutive terms. In 1835 he was united in marriage to Miss Maria ( Louise Dodge, daughter of Governor , Dodge of Wisconsin. Nine children have been the fruits of this union, three only of whom are living: Hon. H. D. Dement, present secretary of , state, and two married daughters, Mrs. , Parsons and Mrs. Squires. ,
