CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP)— Within the next few weeks, Cleveland policewomen will be assigned to basic patrol duty for the ‘first time in the ‘city’s history, Mayor Ralph Perk an nounced Monday. ‘The mayor said'the city would add 45 women to the police force this ‘year’ and assign them to basic patrol units, handling the same duties as men. Fifteen of the women will be hired within the next few weeks under the Impact Cities Pro gram, which also provides funds to hire an additional 173 men for the police force, Perk said. The mayor ‘and Police Chief, Gerald Rademaker are to swear in Tuesday the first 70 patrolmen program, said Cleveland’ would be second to Washington in the number of women assigned to basic patrol duty. The Cleveland Police Depart eneree ey are’ assigned to Women’s Bureau and do not handle patrol .The department’s 50-women quota was lifted by City Council last week after the Women’s Law. Fund had threatened to file a qun which would have delayed the hiring of additional policemen.
