nk :»rejo.U.S. rural life gains spotlight“A very American comedy of rural life” is the description given of, •Broken Dishes,” by its director William C. de Mille, head of the department of drama.Slated for production on Feb. 8. this play by Martin Flavin features character parts to the exclusion of other types and should treat the audience to an enjoyable evening in the realm of make-believe according to Professor de Mille.“Although still In the embryo stage, the cast is developing nicely and should be quite a good one, stated the director.Professor de Mille’s studio is currently filled with stem-looking archaic wood furniture typical of early America which is still widely used in backwoods regions even today. An old wooden organ which remains capable of producing a bit of melody stands Imposingly in one corner of the room, while a plain round table suggests the likelihood of a supper scene.It is in this rustic atmosphere that the cast of “Broken Dishes” goes through its practice sessions. Later the material will be transported to the Bovard stage where it will provide the setting for the public presentation of the play. Most of these pieces of old Americana are the property of the department of drama.Members of the cast are Elaine Freeman, Florence Stevenson, Shir-leymae Spaulding, Virginia Patton, James Butler, Dicfc Thorpe, Don Rochlen, Bob Dischner, Leo Mala-muth, and Burl Smith. Acting as understudies are Mary Munday, Barbara Wilcox, Edward Barber, and John Archer.Elaine Freeman will be remembered as the sophisticated lady who lost out in a romantic duel with her younger sister in the battle to gain the affections of their suitor In the recently produced play “Holiday,” which appeared in Bovard a few weeks ago.
