Grant Guest of Honor at Notable Gathering AroundBanquet Board» rOak Park business men gave their annual banquet Thursday evening at the Second, Congregational church.Brilliant features marked the eventi.and made it one of the most notable 'ijn the annals of the association, which appears to be getting larger and moreefficient with every passing day.General Fred D. Grant, son of the famous general who was president, was tho guest of honor and Company D., Captain L. C. Hayes commanding, came to give military tone to the occasion and take of the generous banquet spread by women of the church. Every one on the program seemed to be in such a happy mood that affairs progressed with wit “exuded, like attar of roses from the otter,” toGeneral Grant. Jesse A. Baldwin was grven an enthusiastic recep- 1__ __ a candidate for the circuitbehch and delivered a notable address»on “The Trend of the Times” which i1 confirmed his hearers in their desire to see him serving as a member of e judiciary.C. F. Hafner as installing officer put e new officers thru a ritual that convulsedi the audience and branded him as a. wit second only to Mark himself. J. T. Sias, the retiring president, was presented with a gold1 cane, and, to quote General again, “the organization seemedto favor the ‘big stick* in the hands the retiring president rather than the hands of the acting executive.” Stories never before heard by any-te, except the relator, were told Sy e dozen, even Dir* E. W. Bishop atting out a few new ones.General Grant, like the man he is, was on time and from 6till after 7 was given a rein the' parlors of -’the church. Hayes marched his brave company in and presented it to the iajor general with that snap and smart precision that denotes an effi-comander, certain of his men. o hundred and forty-six men sat down at the tables in the basementwhere the banquet was served.
