THE OBERLIN REVIEW.1841, being a classmate of ex-President Fairchild. In 1895 he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Oberlin.Rev. John Patchin, ’46. died at his home in North Olmsted, 0., December n, 1901. Following is a sketch of his life, as given by an intimate friend:The writer has been requested to prepare a sketch of the life of Rev. John Patchin, who was a graduate of Oberlin in the class of 1846, and it is a glad service that I render in telling what I know of this true man and faithful minister of Christ for more than fifty years. I first became intimately ac quainted with Mr. Patchin when he entered the college in 1842. It fell to me to hear his recitations in Latin and Greek through the freshman year. He was a good scholar, always in his place, and without reproach in all things. When he came to the sophomore year, James Monroe became a member of the same class, and in alphabetical order occupied an adjoining seat. They were special friends ever afterwards. Mr. Patchin was born December 8, 1820, and Professor Monroe, July 18, 1821.When I became a citizen of Michigan, in1848, I found Mr. Patchin living in Raisin, in that state, where he taught three years. He was subsequently pastor of Congregational churches in that state for nineteen years, and he had the rare experience of being recalled after an interval of twenty-five years to the pastorate of one of these churches, which he had served for five years before. The more thoroughly anybody became acquainted with Mr. Patchin, the better they liked him. His wife, who survives him, was married to him in August, 1846. For more than fifty-five years they ha 1 rej Diced in the happy union. They were members of the same college class from the beginning to the end of their college course. Seven children blessed their union, of whom four remain to this day—Mrs. Charlotte E. Bickford, Mrs. Florence Hunter, John W. Patchin, and William Patchin —the first of whom graduated from Oberlin in 1869. Mr. Patchin, after an active service in the Christian ministry of over half a century, spent the last few years of his life in Olmsted, O. At the age of 81 years and 12 days he was called to go up higher. His whole life was a benediction to ah who knew him. Edmund B. Fairfiki.d.
