SOUTH AUSTRALIA .—The Assembly, on Aug. 19, decided on a five weeks’ reces.The Council had also adjourned, and was to meet again on Sept. 24. The Treasurer’s motion to raise £120,000 by Exchequer bills to make good the deficit in the revenue on 31st December, 1871, and for construction of roads and bridges, was amended in the Assembly, so as to provide £65,000 for roads and bridges only, and the motion was passed n that form. A measure has been carried for providing the survey of lines for railways or roads from the northern agricultural areas to the coast. On August 22, the Government at Adelaide received a message direct from Port Darwin, intimating that the last length of wire of the overland telegraph had been stretched, aud uninterrupted telegraphic communication across the continent established. The red ensign was immediately hoisted on the Victoria Tower, the Town-hali bells were rung, the Press flagstaff's were decked with bunting, and the Consular flags were hoisted. The public offices were also ordered to be closed. The liberal offer of the Hon. T. Elder, to explore the country between Central Mount Stewart and Western Australia has been accepted by the Government, and Mator Warburton will command the expedition.
