See Pete Sack’s work at reception tonight By Lisa Boykin Batts Times Life Editor Pete Sack took lots and lots of paintings to exhibit at the Wilson Arts Center. More than 250 of them to be exact! A collage of his water colors fills a gallery wall at the Arts Center, where the exhibit, “Ordinary People,” opens tonight with a recep tion from 5:30 to 7:30. Last week, Sack came to Wilson from his home in Raleigh to install 250 small paintings, each roughly 5X7 inches. “It’s just like a puzzle,” he said. “I try to make them fit.” The project started out as small studies for the large projects he was working on — oftentimes baseball card or yearbook images As the collection grew, he was told the pieces would look good in a show. So he tried it. Sack has shown the small paintings in other galleries as well and said people look at them two ways. First they stop and look from a distance and see them as a whole, like a quilt. Then they move closer and look at them individually and see the faces, the landscapes, the still life images. At the Wilson Arts Cen ter show, they will also see another passion of the art ist, who studied painting at East Carolina University large scale baseball cards painted in watercolors and oil. Sack has been drawing baseball players since he was in middle school. His dad taught him all about watercolors. In high school, he started putting images on his wall of baseball players. Some of the game’s favorite stars are on the walls of Arts Center: Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, Carl Yastrzemski, Frank Robinson. The vintage baseball card paintings just went off exhibit at Durham Athletic Park where the Durham Bulls play. Sack was com missioned by the Bulls to do a large baseball card painting of Jackie Robin son. Sack has a studio at Art space in Raleigh and does quite a bit of commission work, including a portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh for the City of Raleigh Mu seum. He will be at the Arts Cen ter for tonight’s reception. Also opening tonight is a collection of work by Wil son Active Artist featured artist Alan Whitehead and students at Sallie B. How ard School. The exhibit will remain at the Arts Center through Feb. 21. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. AwnALINe.
