Somerville man killed Sunday in Caldwell motorcycle crashOfficials say trauma to the head listed as cause of deathA 21-year-old Somerville man was killed in a motorcycle accident early Sunday when he failed to negotiate a sharp turn on Mustang Street in Caldwell, lost control and landed on the nearby railroad tracks.John Wilson Rains was pronounced dead at the scene at about 9:30 a.m. by Pet. 3 Justice of the Peace Bob Doonan. Trauma to the head is the preliminary cause of death, Doonan said.Rains was not wearing a helmet, said Caldwell Police Officer Marvin Beseda.Beseda said the accident probably occurred at about 3 a.m. when Rains, driving a 1984 black Honda, was traveling west on Mustang Street. Rains failed to negotiate a 90-degree right-hand turn onto Buck Street, hit the curb on Mustang and then bounced onto the railroad tracks, Beseda said. The impact of hitting the railroad tracks knocked him airborne, and he then landed in the gravel packed around the tracks, he said.Rains suffered a large puncture wound to the temple, and a helmet might have saved his life, Beseda said.It could have. It is very possible. I think it (wearing a helmet) would have been in his favor, Beseda said.Due to low-lying fog and little traffic in the area, Rains' body was not discovered until about 9 a.m., Beseda said.A Santa Fe railroad engineerfound him just after the fog lifted and notified corporate officials in Temple, he said. Santa Fe officials then notified the Burleson County Sheriffs Department’s dispatcher, and police were sent to the scene at about 9:15 a.m., Beseda said.No evidence of alcohol was found at the scene, although a blood-alcohol sample was taken at the scene and sent to the Department of Public Safety's testing laboratory in Austin, Beseda said.
