State Beverage Department agents last year destroyed 201 moonshine stills in Bay, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Washington, and Calhoun counties. In the process of eliminating the stills, agents destroyed 1,366 gal lons of moonshine and property valued at $75,894. M. A. Sanders, agent in charge of the six-county area, noted in his yearly report. Eighty-three stills were destroy ed in Holmes County, followed by Calhoun, 50; Jackson, 24, Bay 23; Washington, 15; and Gulf, 6. A total of 153 arrests were made and 21 vehicles seized, according to Sanders’ report. Persons convicted of operating illicit distilleries in 1956 received combined sentences amounting to almost 35 years, according to the report.
