More Than $70,000 to Be Spent in Syracuse, Manager Says New Service Station Unit Costing $50,000 Will Be Started in March Under Program Detailed plans for expansion, alter ation and renovation of the Sears, Roebuck Company store in Syra cuse, beginning at once and entailing expenditure of $120,000 over a period of several months, were announced last night by Joseph L. Marshall, gen eral manager of the business here. The program calls for addition to the Sears store building at South Sa fina and West Raynor Avenue, t0 provide for a $50,000 super-service station. Plans and specifications are being prepared for that unit, with ground breaking set tentatively for March 20. The greater part of the balance of the expenditure is to be devoted to the most modern type of equipment, Mr. Marshall said. Of the $120,000 budgeted for the improvements and expansion, the expenditures directly on and for the job, in Syracuse wages and material purchases will slightly exceed $70,000, it is Agured. “After careful survey this expendi ture is being made because of the optimistic outlook we hold for busi ness in Syracuse,” the general man ager said, reflecting the viewpoint of the largest mercantile organization in the world. The Syracuse store, opened Oct. 2, 1929, has attained 40th rank in the system of 402 stores, despite in clusion of 20 stores in great centers of population among the top-rankers. New departments are to be added to the 50 now housed in the store, and half a dozen departments are to be enlarged by rearrangement, and addition to facilities. Customer traffic the last two and a half months of 1938 formed one fac tor in producing the decision on ex penditure for expansion here, Mr. Marshall said.” Coupled with this is recognition that as buyer demand in creases, added capacity must be af forded internally and by building. “The company, nationally progres sive, has outlined a large program of modernization, involving expenditure of several million dollars,” the Syra cuse executive added. “Another thing prompting us here is that while we have a complete de partment store as to variety of mer chandise, we have felt that we can offer greater completeness in stocks. “Our additional departments will be, first, musical instruments, and second, building materials. Further more, there will be great enlarge ments in the following departments: Ready to wear, furniture, a complete, expanded department, drugs, drapery and rugs, and piece goods. “The renovation and modernization plans includes the most modern type of fixtures, to increase facility of selection and ease of service, so-called stream-lning, and also a color scheme that will add greatly to the illumina tion effect. “Expansion of our ready-to-wear department is an outgrowth of Sears fashion development, based on recent expansion in facilities of our national organization, tying in with New York and Hollywood designs, and timed with Fifth Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. Mr. Marshall said that men will be at work on all three floors next week on jobs already contracted in the re modeling, enlargement of depart ments and services and installation of special equipment. The service station addition, to front on Salina Street at the south end of the present buildings, is to increase facilities for servicing auto motive equipment, the store execu tive said, and meet pressure on a department in which the Syracuse unit has been among the 10 leaders in the system. “we showed an increase the last quarter of 1938,” the general manager said, “but we observed also that cus tomer volume was up. We plan aisles to meet traffic needs and other re spacing of our interior to give cus tomers better, quicker shopping facilities, besides improving display, widening merchandise assortments and aiding selection so that we can meet increasing buyer demand that is ahead.” The $120,000 job will be carried on with work so timed as to entail no interference with the regular conduct of business.
