I l»ave also read the following language in the Gazette of last Saturday: MIt is possible thatthe oramission here was au Jnno-cent one. The Journal Clerk of the Senate was notoriously incompetent to discharge bU duties, which we understand were 111 the main performed by other*.” This is very severe language, and as incorrect as severe. Your limited acquaintance with me could not have given you any persoual knowledge of my In* competency or competency. And your understanding in regard to the discharge of my duties as Journal Clerk is .so grossly erronous, that In justice to you I must conclude that Homp evil person or persons haveI ntnAAAll lliv It I'nli rr«n nal n! .... The original Journal contains a full and complete record of the Senate’s proceeding* in every essential, aud cannot be correctly ceusured for an Intentional or unintentional omission. It presents a legible hand writing of democratic style, which Is as easily read as common print, especial \y if the reader be a Democrat. There is not ft tlgureor won! therein that I did not write unaided by the suggestions, dictations, tutorage or assistance of any kind, from any person, and the Journal was read without blunder or stammer by the Secretary of the Senate every morning of the session, immediately after prayer, and approved by the Senate. I do not remember of it ovoi being altered, amended or added to, or of any complaint rmide or of coufu-ion concerning it, except on the morning of the oHlh day, when there were omissions of the number and date of a bill, neither of which hud been given to me, nor were within reach of my iuformation at any time previous to themorning reading of the journal.
