JANUARY 17. 1973Jeff1BradNamed All-StatePN-G's dynamic duo, Jeff Bergeron and Brad Burnett, took first team honors for All-State football balloting in the Annual Texas Sportswr iters Association Class 4A super team.Bergeron, who has gained almost every plaudit known to the high school football awards-makers, and Burnett, whomany term the finestlineman ever to play the game on the reservation, were joined on the first team by Beaumont's superb running back,Reggie Rogers.Anthony Bryant, Lincoln's great defensive tackle, was awarded a spot on the selection's second team.Bergeron, who played as a starter for most of three years for the Indians, maintained a weight at near 190 pounds.In the three seasons, he carried the football for 3,928 yards and crossed the stripe 67 times. All told, he rolled up 408 points while wearing the Puple and White.He had already gained even more notable recognition this year by being named to a sportsmagazine's All-Americateam and more recently to Parade Magazine's All-USA eleven.He had earned a spot on the 1971 second team All-State squad last year as ajunior.Brad became the most feared defensive individual on the Indians' 9-1 and 8-2 squads as a junior and senior. His phenomenal ability to be where the ball is resulted in his setting a school record for fumble recoveries over his career. Twenty one times it was Brad's 6-2, 220 pound hulk getting up off the ball last.Both players were wedeserved of the awards. Hard work, spirit, ability,and leadership are the main ingredients in selecting the finest eleven players from across the state, and it's for certain that the sportswriters were on the mark in choosingthis pair.Both have been the target of many early bird recruiting effort and likely have only begun to be courted. For the most part, they have been recruited as a pair, not individually, and both seem to like it that way. Score a big mark for the school which winds up with this set.Hayes}Bromley Now LU StarsFormer Port Arthurschool boy basketball standouts, Danny Bromley and Elton Hayes, are delivering outstanding performances for the 1972-73 Lamar University Cardinals. ♦Highly touted after a brilliant prep career at Thomas Jefferson, the 6 4 Bromley is living up to his credentials after finally cracking the starting lineup. Hayes, who did not play last year and was thus red-shirted, has been superb this season and improving with each game, especially on offense.After leading the Lamar freshman team in scoringJohn Prien, a tough rebounder. But, the soft-shooting southpaw sparked Lamar University to ahard-earned 80-73 triumph over Wayland Baptist College by pumping in 19 points and plucking off 13 rebounds and has been a starter ever since.Bromley got 25 points and 13 caroms against East Texas Baptist and had two sub par efforts against Rice University and T.C.U. before going on a hot streakthat has now stretched over a six game period.Over the past six games, Bromley has averaged 23 points per outing while hitting a sizzling 63 percent of his floor shots. He pumped in a career high of 33 against Centernary College and its 7-1 star Robert Parish and canned30 against the mighty Southwestern Louisiana Ragin Cajuns Wednesday.scoring with a 19.2 norm and ranks second in field goal percentage (.562) and rebounding (8.9) behind Hayes.BROMLEY is currently leading the Cardinals inDanny has been a great surprise for us this year, beams Martin.
