Mr. Smith, was used by the Society as the Asylum for the Orphans, under their care till tlie year 1838. The confinement and impure air, consequent upon so many being confined to so small a building, soon shewed its deleterious effects upon the health of the children,-and it was not long before the attention of that kind and good man, Cornelius Heeney was called to the 'subject, which resulted in' the magnificent donation of sixteen lots of ground oil Congress street, between Clinton and Court streets, on which as soon .thereafter As possible was erected.a good substantial brick-building,' At present occupied by the orphans and sisters of -charity* who have the r . jcure of them; .adjoining the house is a spacious | piny ground secured to the Orphans, and enclosed otn, j by the munificence of the man who through life, has n the j been a father to tlie Orphan. . t six- f The building of the Asylum was commenced in j the year 1837, and was taken possession of by the j Orphans on its coihplctidn in 1838 ; it was erected Vis:- -at an expense of about $7,400, which large amount of money has been presented to the Society by the charitable citizens ol* Brooklyn, New York, aud the adjoining towns; apd has.enabled them-to liquidate all the debts incurred by its erection, leaving, at ihe present time, the trifling sum, comparatively spcak-ing, of $298 standing.against the Society.; which has been incurred to relieve the daily, wants of the Institution, * * *The Directors also acknowledge with great plea-' sure and heartfelt gratitude, a donation from Cornelius IJeeny, Esq., of four lots of ground with the ilson. j expense of enclosing the same, located between’ 8t. tnd if! Raufs church and the Asylum grounds, which is to be- used as.a burial ground, and the proceeds thereof to go into the Treasury of the Orphan Asylum, such being the will of the respected donor. The receipt of $532, the proceeds of the charity sermon, preached by the Very Rev,. Dr. Power, of New York, on the l2th.of December, in St. Paul’s church, is hereby thankfully acknowledged ; as also, the- receipt of - $124, being the collection in St. Paul’s church, on Christmas day—said collection (as usual) being appropriated for the benefit of the -Asyf lum. It will not be inopportune at tlie present time to acknowledge a handsome donation of sugar and coffee, from Mrs. S. Bycrly, as also a valuable donation of flour, and a bountiful supply of jnovisions oh Christmas day, from John B, Lasala, Esq., of New York; who, although die has left our city,-has carried with him and still retains a kind recollection of .our Orphans. * - *The Directors, also .acknowledge the Valuable services of * the Physician rendered gratuitously to tlie Institution since its first organization.
