Orphan Asylum in ■the eity of Brooklyn, do m’ost respectfully present to the friends of the Orphans, the. following state-i ment hi relation jto tle affairs of the Institution of which they have the .Supervision, giving a brief sketch of its progress, from the first organization to the present time. . ...The-JR.. Or plum Asylum Society, w;is. organs iscd m the year 1829, and was incorporated by $n act of the Legislature in the year 1834.-The house in Jay street, opposite St. James’ -Church, at present occupied.by the Rev. Mr. Smith, was used by the Society as the Asylum for the Orphans, under their care till the year 1838. The confinement and impure air, consequent upon so many being confined to so small a building, soon shewed its deleterious effects upon the health of the children,.and it was not long before the attention of that kind and good man, Cornelius Heeney was called to the subject, which resulted in the magnificent donation of sixteen lots of ground oil Congress street, between Clinton and Court streets, on which as' soon .thereafter as possible was erected.agood substantial brick* building,' ixt present occupied \ by the orphans and sisters' of -charity* who have the | care of them; .adjoining the house is a spacious | play ground secured to the • Orphans, and enclosed » ] by the munificence of the man who through life, has ‘ been a father to the Orphan. .The building of the Asyluni was commenced in ] the year 1837, and was taken possession of by the j Orphans on its coihpletibn in 1838 ; it was erected - * at an expense of about §7,400, which large ampunt of money has been presented to the Society by the charitable citizens of Brooklyn, New York, aud the adjoining towns ; apd has.enabled them to liquidate all the debts incurred’by its erection, leaving, at ihe present time, the trifling sum, comparatively speaking, of §298 standing.against the Society.; which has been incurred to relieve the daily*, wants of the Institution. ' * -The Directors also acknowledge with great pica-* * j sure and heartfelt gratitude, a -donation from Cor-5 i nclius Ifeeny, Esq., of four lots of ground with the . j expense of enclosing the same, located between St. f! Puufs church and the Asylum grounds, which is to 5 be- used as.a burial ground, and the proceeds thereof to go into the Treasury of the Orphan Asylum, such being the will of the respected donor.The receipt of §532, the proceeds of the charity sermon, preached by the Very Rev,. Dr. Power, of . ! New York, on the 12th.of December, in St. Paul’s church, is hereby thankfully acknowledged; as also. the receipt of §*124, being, the collection in St. Paul’s church, on Christmas day-—said collection (as usual)-being appropriated for the benefit of the Asyr lum. It will not be inopportune at the present time to acknowledge .a handsome donation of sugar and coflee, from Mrs. S. Bycrly, as also a valuable donation of flour, and a bountiful supply of provisions oh Christmas day, from John B. Lasala, Esq., of New York; who, although *he has left our city,-has carried with hinr and still retains a kind recollection of .our Orphans.- - ’ * *rlhc Directors, also -acknowledge . the Valuable services of• the Physician rendered gratuitously to the Institution since its first organization. The valuable painting presented by M.
