Atherton, New Hope, dies at 77Robert Crossley Atherton of New Hope, an art director for Ladies Home Journal and former editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine, died at Doylestown Hospital on Sunday He was??He was born m Philadelphia, a son of the late Alfred and Ada Crossley Atherton He was the husband of Mary Stambaugh Atherton He was a graduate of Frank ford High School in Philadelphia He worked for the Curtis Publishing Co , publishers of Ladies Home Journal for 12 years, and for Hearst Magazines of New York publishers ofCosmopolitan, for 18 years He served as executive editor and editor in chief at CosmopolitanHe commuted from his farm in Jamison for 14 years while work mg at CosmopolitanHe was an accomplished artist Using the name Crossley Atherton, he specialized in contemporary paintingsHis works are on display in many private collections and have been on exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fme Arts, the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Philadelphia Sketch Club aswell as many museumsthroughout the countryUntil a few months ago, he had a studio in Lambertville, N J He was a long-time member of the Art Alliance of Philadelphia, the Sketch Club, the Wilderness Club and the Philadelphia Art Directors' Club He was also a member of the Lotos Club, the Dutch Treat Club and the AD Club, all of New York CityHe is listed in “Who's Who in America He was also a trapshooter of national reputation and has won many state and national awardsLocally, he belonged to the Quaker City Gun Club, the Bucks County Fish and Game Associa tion of Doylestown and the Two Century Trap Club of JamisonIn addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jane A Leopold of Greenlawn, Long Island, N Y and Anne Swan of Union, Maine, one sister, Edith Klinger of Philadelphia, and two grandchildrenPrivate funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the familyReed and Stembcb DoylestownOBITUARIES
