South County is in for what some claim will be the most interesting and exciting parade ever held on the Florida Southwest Coast. The Jan. 25 parade will honor Venice's 50th birthday and is being supported by the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce. WACC Executive Director William McFarland said Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey Circus has assured the basis of the parade by including 18 elephants with beautiful girls aboard each one. There will also be a contingent of circus wagons with assorted animals and clowns to delight youngsters. Floats from around the state are expected. Three Orange bowl floats will participate. A number of outstanding bands and patriotic marching units with flags and music will fill the air,” McFarland said. Co-chairmen for the parade are Joe Bezjian, Mike Dorst, John Pettenger, Dave Morgan and McFarland. Invitations are being sent to high schools throughout the area and McFarland said any band wishing to compete for prize awards should contact the parade committee at 485-3510. Any bank, club, business or organization wishing to enter a float in the parade may learn the requirements by calling the same number. Qualifications are fair and reasonable, the committee claims. “Not all are expected to be of Rose Bowl quality, but beauty, interest and good taste are essential,” McFarland said. The parade route will be announced later, McFarland added. Starting time will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25. The parade will commemorate 50 years of service by the chamber as well as honoring the city's golden anniversary.
