The Florida Watermelon Growers and Distributors Association will hold its second annual convention Saturday and Sunday, February 7-8, at the Sheraton-Cypress Gardens Motor Inn near Winter Haven. The Florida Watermelon Queen Contest also will be held in conjunction with the con vention at Cypress Gardens on Sunday, February 8. Several well-known agricultural experts will be included in the two-day program, speaking on growing, harvesting, distribution and marketing of watermelons. More than 100 watermelon growers and shippers from throughout the state are ex pected to attend the convention, according to FWGDA President Lester E. Faulhaber of Lakeland. Florida is the No. 1 water melon producing state in the country, with an annual crop value of almost $20 million. Oregon’s Crater Lake, with a depth of 1,932 feet, is the deepest lake in the United States.
