OryxB,lt; , Sightings Whet Official ( ariosi tvEither It Is Oryx NotBy JACK FRY legislative ReporterPersistent reports of sightingsof an African type of antelopein the frigid northwestern tipof British Columbia have whetted the curiosity of provincial game officials.The thing has been sighted from the Stikine Rive? through the Atlin Lake region near the top of the Alaska Panhandle.It has been described by eye-witneaaef as an African oryx, an animal which Is sand-colored and hat horns curving back from its head toward itshaunches,* * *But fish and game branchinformation bfficer Bill Ward said Wednesday, “It is impossible for this species to bethere.*’ tv “There is not one within5,000 miles of there, and if they were introduced they could notlive there—it is not the right terrain for them and the winters are too tough.”Game officials say there may be an animal which was mistaken for the oryx, but what tt can be is anybody’s guess.; # * * I tv---This creature is like the Sas-quatch B.C.’s version of the abominable snowman of theHimalayas—in that its existence has never been proved and us species has not been identified.It has been popping up over the past years, much the same as the Sasquatch or Ogopogo type of thing- It is strictly a fartciful thing, with no shred of evidence — except that tt ii reported by people who sound reasonable. said Mr. Ward.Continued on Page 1
