Campbell, an d requesting, tho shcrilf to come lo th« » scene and bring the coroner. Deputy Sheriff It. W. McNair responded to the summons promptly carrying with him Coroner Phillips and a number of other persons from town. On arriving upon tho scene they found tho dead man lying on the floor of an ill-furnished home, weltering in his own tdood, just as ho liod fallen, with a ghastly gun-shot wound in tho neck, just below the jaw. Tho gun was anordinary shot gun and t lie whole charge of bird-shot, with which it was loaded had entered in a wad, tearing through one of tho jugular veins, producing ins bin t death.The principal witnesses examined were Mrs. Campbell and two daughters, whose testimony,’ as recorded by the Coroner, is given below :Campbell was a man of oO or and bore a rather unsavory reputation. Some of his neighbors think he hud shown marks or insanity for some time past. Do this as it may, surely he brought upou hitnsolf and family a bitter experience.Mrs. Campbell, being sworn, testified :He woke up in night, .seemed lo be angry with me. I asked him what I hud done. Ho accused mo of beingout. 1 told him I couldn't see why ho suspected mo. 1 told him I had prayed fur him. He struck her two or three times, limey took hold of him then and lie struck him. Braey ran out in feide room cud got a gun. i tried to save him but was lute. IIracy shot him. I was afraid of him. He threatened to kill me often. I think ho would have hurt Lydia seriously if It racy hadn't shot him. limey was trying to protect myself and Lydia and luid to kill him l«» do so.Lydia Cinq boll, being sworn, testified :When I woke, 1 «»•a and Mamma wore quarreling. He told Mama he would cut her 111rout. He got up and made a lire. Ho set up then and quarreled and cursed on. Ho then turned to hit me with Ids list. Mama caught him and brother also caught him by the arm. I tried to get. loose from him. Ho said lie would kill me. Afti ■ that time brother entered with tho gun. I didn’t hour father say he would got the gun. 1 think father intended to kill me an i mother and i believe he would have killed us if brother hadn’t saved us. He was always desperate when mad. Ho haa been abusing his family for a long time.Miss Carrie Campbell, buhig sworn,testified :1 was waked thi morning by a fuss between father and mother.
