MUCH ENTHUSIASM AT LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. C.£. MURRAY FIRST COMMODORE MEMBERS MAY ERECT A CLUB HOUSE. Regatta is Also a Prospect—Organiza tion Will Be Regularly Incorpor ated—Believed Organization Can Accomplish Much. The preliminary organization of 4 boat club for Traverse City was com pleted last evening at the meeting held in the Record office. C. E. Murray was elected the first commodore of the club and E. J. Fulghum vice commodore. The club will be regularly incorpor ated. There were seventeen owners pres ent last evening and much enthusiasm was manifested. C. E. Murray was chosen chairman of the meeting and L. L. Stevenson secretary. After out lining a number of important things that might be accomplished by a club of this character, J. W. Hannen moved that a permanent yacht club be organ ized. The motion was carried without a dissenting vote and the election of officers was proceeded with, the fol lowing being chosen: Commodore, C. E. Murray. Vice commodore, I. J. Fulghum. Secretary, L. L. Stevenson. Treasurer, Robert J. Price. After the election, while the mem bers smoked a box of cigars fur nished by Commodore Murray, the aims and objects of the club were talked over. There was a general feel ing that the mouth of Boardman river should be so improved that boats could enter and find a safe anchorage in the stream. It was also thought that a pier could be constructed over on the west side so that a basin could be pro vided and the boats left there. There was a feeling also that the club should erect a permanent home and provide an anchorage for the boats of the members. There were several locations suggested, among them being the piece of ground owned by the city at the junction of Fifth and Wadsworth streets. The objection to this was the lack of suitable mooring room. Another location which met with much favor was one on the west side. On account of the shallow water, a breakwater could be constructed at little cost. The west side members could keep their boats there while those on the east side could keep theirs in the river and run over to the west side whenever they desired. After some discussion along the same lines, a committee consisting of J. W. Hannen, J. M. Gillett and A. L. Bachant was appointed by Commodore Murray, on motion, to draft a consti tution. The name of the club, colors, by-laws, the election of a board of di rectors and other matters were left open until the next meeting which will be at the call of the commodore. While the call last evening was for motor boat owners only, the new club membership will not be restricted to owners of power craft but will also ad mit those owning sailboats. There are several of these here and there will be several more next year. The new club starts out very suc cessfully and the indications are that much will be accomplished during this season. Last year communications were re ceived here from the Chicago Motor Boat club asking what inducements could be offered for a race to this city. As there was no club here then, noth ing was done about the matter and the race was run to Mackinaw. It is pos sible that the club may be invited to come to this city this year and at the time of its coming a general regatta will be held on Grand Traverse day. This would attract a large number of fine power boats and would be a great advertisement for the city. It is probable also that a number of the summer visitors who own motor boats will be members of the new club, several of them having expressed a willingness to join such an organiza tion last year.
