SCRIPTURAL IDYLL REBEKAH.SUCCESSFULLY RENDERED BEFORE A VAST AUDIENCE IN THE SOUTH NORWALK METHODIST CHURCH.Long before the hour set for the opening of the big doors of the First Methodist church, last night, which was 7:15 o’clock, the crowd gathered in front of the edifice and lined the paths and sidewalk the full length of the church awaiting anxiously for a seat within where they could hear and see the actors in the rendition of the beautiful cantata, Rebekah. As every one knows Rebekah was most extensively advertised and people from far and near willingly purchased tickets for the grand musical event and which at the same time they knew enriched the treasury of the Norwalk Hospital. ▼The Hospital is a charitable institution which appeals to all classes of people and this fact was well evidenced by the crowd which passed the portalsand filled the auditorium of the new church. To the untiring energy, hard work and constant application of Mr. Harry Pepper, as the director and manager of the musieale all credit for its success belongs. He selected the singers and drilled them in a most professional manner. An improvised platform had been arranged to the rear of the pulpit for the chorus of 100, and was artistically decorated with plants and flowers. The program opened with Beetho ven’s Coriolanus on the organ by Prof.Harry J. Zehm, which was finely executed. This was followed by the chorus consisting, of male and female voices in the ballads, “Love’s Old, Sweet Song,” Mollov; and “The Lost Chord,” Sullivau. The rendition was magnificent, the voices blending in a sweetly charming way which elicited the applause of the whole house. Rev. A. S. Kavanagh read from the 24th chapter of Genesis, which was followed by Barnaby’s “Rebekah.” Mrs. Lillian Sherwood Newkirk held the title role and never did she sing to better advantage; Mr. Pepper’s Isaac was superb, and Mr. Bellows as Eliezer was excellent. After the singing of the Idyll the Doxology was sung by the audience, and each person present carried home a handsome souvenir in the form of a programme. On every side to-day can be heard the praises sung of the grand musical event and this fact must be a source of much pleasurable gratification to all those who spent their time and energy to make the entertainment a success.
