THE LATE FATAL MINIL’G ACCWEXT.-o-Tli- young man Henry Harrison, who was killed ou Friday last u the Garden Gully Freehold claim, wits the subject of an inquest at the lteudigo Hospital on Saturday, by the coroner, Mr. St rick laud.Mr. Grainger, inspector of mine;), attended on behalf of the Mining Department, and Mr. Savilic, legal manager, watched the case for the Garden Gully Freehold Company.The nrst witness called was Thomas Jones, mining manager of the Garden Gully Freehold Company, who d«pos«d that be had known the deceased for about two years. For the last three months, o'T and ou, lie had beeu permitted to sleep in the engine-house of the company. He was not employed bv witness, but occasionally was paid for such work a* he did. Ou Friday afteruoou witness was engaged ou the surface at a crab-winch iu lowering the working barrel o: the pumps from the -IC'D feet level to send it down to the 500 feet. He lowered it ou to the bearers, and then went dowu the shaft to the 400 feet, where John Macintosh, a miucr, was to assist witness in making it fast to another crab-wiuch at that level. Before leaving the surface witness asked the deceased to lower the slack rope when iio signalled by knocking 2. He undertook to do so, and witness wen: below. At that time tho engine-driver, John King, was at hia post ia the engine-house. Witness told tho deceased that when ho knocked 3 ho was to get tbo engine-driver Ij assist him so hoist up, and -Iso told King, tho engine-driver, to help the deceased to pull up. When below about ten minutes witness wanted the slack of the rope lowering, aud knocked 2, when immediately a lot of the alack of the rope came down tbo abaf:. He at ouce signalled to be brought to be brought to the surface, knowing that something must have gone wrong, and on reaching the surface he found that deceased had been injured, and a number of persons were around him. Witness noticed that over 100 feet of the rope had *' run away, but that the cud was still fastened to the drum of the crab-wiuch. Deceased was immediately brought to the Bendigo Hospital, saying ou the way that lie was going to die. Witness went directly from the hospital to the inspector of mines, aud be arrived on tho mino in a very short time. To the inspector of mines: Witness had full power to employ aufScicut bands oa this mice.
