O —Tlis young man Ilcnry Harrison, who was killed ou Friday last at the Garden Gully Freehold claim, was the subject of an inquest at the Bendigo Hospital on Saturday, by the coroner, Mr. Strickland.Mr. Gr-uuger, inspector of mines, attended on behalf of the Milling Department, aud Mr. Savilic, legal manager, watched the case for the Garden Gully Freehold Company.The arst witness called was Thomas Jones, ininiug manager of the Garden Gully Freehold Company, who deposad that be had known the deceased for about two years. For the last three mouths, otl and on. he had been permitted to sleep iu the engine-house of tiie company. Ho was uo* employed bv witness, but occasionally was paid for such work a* he did. On Friday afternoon witness was engaged ou the surface at a crab-winch iu lowering the working barrel o: the pumps from the 400 feet level to send it down to the 500 feet. He lowered it ou to the bearers, and then went dowu the shaft to the -S00 feet, where John Macintosh, a miner, was to assist witness in making it fast to another crab-wiuch at that level. Before leaving the surface witness asked the deceased to lower the slack rope when ho signalled by knocking •2. Ha u ad or took to do ao. and witness wen: below. At that time tho engine-driver, John King, was at bio post su the engine-house. Witness told tho deceased that when ho knocked 3 ho was to get tbo engine-driver If assist him so hoist up, and also told King, tho cuginc-drivcr, to help the deceased to puli up. When below about ten minutes witness wanted the slack of the rope lowering, aud knocked 2, when immediately a lot oi the alack oi the rope came down tho abaf:. He at once signalled to be brought to be brought to the surface, knowing that something must have gone wrong, and on reaching the surface he found that deceased had lecu injured, and a number of persons were around him. Witness noticed chat over 100 feet of the rope had ruu away,” but that the cud was still fastened to the drum of the crab-wiuch. Deceased was immediately brought to tbo Bendigo Hospital, saying ou the way that lie was going to die.
