Borough reexamines Logan Ave. parking(The Daily Herald/Adeena Harbst)Borough Council plans to replace six meters along the 1000 block of Logan Avenue as cars have reportedly been filling the spaces all day, limiting access for others to downtown businesses.By ADEENA HARBST EditorTyrone Borough Council this week again discussed the issue of parking at the 1000 block of Logan Avenue, between 10th and 11th streets, where six meters were removed this past September after a majority vote to a proposal made by Councilman David Snyder.“It was a trial run to see how it would impact parking availability for businesses along that stretch,” said Snyder. The Borough is pleased with the business growth downtown, but says it has impacted parking over the past two years. On Monday, during this month’s council meeting, Councilman Charlie Mills proposed that the meters be reinstalled at Logan Avenue as the same vehicles are repeatedly parking in the location all day.“They’re staying there all day. We need signs that say an hour parking or something,” said Mills. “We need to do something different there.”Council ultimately agreed it has become more detrimental for businesses if the parking spaces are filled by the same vehicles all day. Reportedly, the Chamber of Commerce said residents or business owners started filling the spaces, causing others to relocate.“The people who are working downtown are not using the spaces we freed up,” said Snyder. “I spoke with a couple folks and they areokay with us considering putting in an hour or two-hour parking along that stretch.”As in the past, the question arose on how time-limited parking would be enforced. Snyder said signage and some policing during the day could be enough of a deterrent.“We are back to where we started with this whole dilemma,” said Marvin Frazell, Borough code enforcement officer. “People are just parking all day. No one can do business because everyone is parking there. Why not put meters back in and solve all the problems?” Council recognizes that the issue of parking in the downtown area is complex, especially because the area is both commercial and residential. “Having meters in a residential zone — it’s just weird,” noted Snyder. “But with businesses, we can see a need for parking enforcement.” Council discussed that meters commonlySee ParkingPage 3
