Wreck closed Towanda bypass for more than three hours BY LISA ROBINSON (570) 265-1641 The Daily/Sunday Review TOWANDA — A head-on colli sion that claimed the life of a Williamsport man and shut down the Route 220 bypass in Towanda Township for more than three hours Thursday is still under investigation by state police. The collision, which occurred Towanda Township around noon, involved a school bus and a 2002 Hyundai Accent GS. The bus is owned by McNeal’s Busing of Monroeton. No children or other passengers were on the bus at the time of the collision. The driver of the Hyundai, Barry Singleton, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Singleton was killed when his vehicle traveled from the northbound lane into the south bound lane of Route 220 for an unknown reason, resulting in a head-on collision between his vehi cle and the bus, which was driven by Kay McNeal, 47, of Monroeton. State police said McNeal received minor injuries in the acci dent. She was transported to Memorial Hospital, Towanda, where she was listed in stable con dition Thursday evening. McNeal was wearing a seat belt. The bus, a 1999 Bluebird, sus tained severe damage and the airbags did not deploy, police said. The bus ended up positioned sideways across both lanes of the portion of the highway located behind the Villa Sena Restaurant, but the point of impact is not yet clear, according to bystanders who said they believed it occurred fur ther up the highway. Those bystanders were visiting the Villa Sena Restaurant at the time of the accident and reported hearing the impact, but not seeing what occurred. Debris from the accident was strewn several feet down the high way Police report that Singleton was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and that the airbags in his vehicle deployed.
